Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Glen Cairn follows the guidelines set out in the OCDSB Policy and Procedures for Student Evaluation available here2.

Students at Glen Cairn are assessed in a variety of ways. These assessments include teacher observation, conferences, presentations, performance tasks, rubrics, tests, journals, and self and peer evaluation. As well, all of the students keep a digital portfolio of their work which is used to help promote reflections and self-evaluation.

Student progress is reported to parents through telephone calls, graded assignments and tests, student-led conferences, parent teacher interviews and report cards.

A diagnostic assessment of reading occurs in all divisions using PM Benchmarks, DRA and/or CASI.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

Each year a school improvement plan is developed. During the 2014 - 2015 school year we will continue to develop best practices around numeracy, with a particular focus on proportional reasoning and algebraic thinking.

Our efforts have been recognized by the Ministry of Education, who featured our Math and Science programs in videos on 21st teaching and learning.
