Measures of Student Achievement and Success

The primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning. It's a shared partnership among staff, students, and parents. Regular attendance of students to classes; ongoing communication between school and home; and support for the student's learning activities are important.

Glen Cairn follows the guidelines set out in the OCDSB Policy and Procedures for Student Evaluation.

Students at Glen Cairn are assessed in a variety of ways. These assessments include teacher observation, conferences, presentations, performance tasks, rubrics, tests, journals, and self and peer evaluation. As well, all of the students keep a digital portfolio of their work which is used to help promote reflections and self-evaluation.

Student progress is reported to parents through telephone calls, graded assignments and tests, student-led conferences, parent teacher interviews and report cards.

A diagnostic assessment of reading occurs in all divisions using PM Benchmarks, DRA and/or CASI.

School Learning Plan

Each year a school improvement plan is developed.  It was noted in assessment data from the 2017-2018 school year, that many students struggled with using multiple models for comparing fractions.  This was the basis point for our 2018-2019 term 1 goal. We will focus on developing students' abilities to select multiple strategies in order to solve problems, and be able to explain their thinking and decision making.  Although our focus highlights fractions in Mathematics, by using the "Fractions Across the Curriculum" document, we are able to include all subject areas in our SLP process. Students will be given opportunities to identify fractions in all areas of the curriculum and be provided authentic opportunities to investigate.  During the first term of the 2018-2019 school year teachers will be modeling, through the use of "think alouds", how they select an appropriate problem solving strategy, then students will develop their own capacity to select efficient and appropriate strategies while solving problems.
